What three-hour show would be complete without some New Pornographers, Sparklehorse, Spoon, Fiery Furnaces, The Elected, Electrelane, Hefner etc.?  The fact that many of the bands that we built this show on year after year are no longer making new music illustrates part of the reason for this break.  As Mike likes to say, “indie-rock is a young person’s game”.  We don’t have as much time to see late night shows, or listen to music with the attention this show requires.

We haven’t committed to never doing another show, but for now we’re taking a break.  We’re going to be focusing on community, family and weeding!  But before we do that, Mike and I wanted to leave you with a three-hour show that will hopefully find it’s way into your summer rotation.  We think it will sound as good by the lake as it will on a train or in a car or in the garden.  Enjoy!

Starting off with the lead track off of Atlas Sound’s 2011 disc Parallax, we then get to a track from the highly anticipated album from secretive Canadian duo Purity Ring. The Halifax/Montreal band will be releasing Shrines on July 24th, and we can’t wait for it!

And speaking of acts out of Montreal with albums you can’t wait for: Polaris winner Patrick Watson and band have just released their latest (yesterday). Having listened to it a few dozen times on the CBC Music website, we can’t get enough of this delicately crafted pop, so we end the show with the first three tracks off the disc.

We’re back following  a post-fundraising break (you can still DONATE to CFMU 93.3FM, and we encourage you to do so if you haven’t yet!), and begin by flexing our late-night-radio muscles.  Since we can do pretty much whatever we want at 2am on our ad-free, 95% music podcast, Mike and I decided to sample from two newly released albums that piqued our interest.

The first, Sounds From Nowheresville by English do The Ting Tings, has received mixed reviews, but we’d been lured by their bouncy pop sounds in the past, and think it’s worth a casual listen.  And we end the show with the first three tracks of indie stalwarts The Shins’ latest release Port of Morrow. Still mixed reviews, but considerably better than the ones the poor Ting Tings received.

And as always, myboytheriotgirl packs in a mix of independent pop and rock that you’re unlikely to hear anywhere else on the radio dial, including Futureheads spinoff Field Music, and Toronto-based chanteuse Emma-Lee who is touring in support of her 2012 disc Backseat Heroine (and playing this Friday at The Drake in Toronto). We also use the way-back machine to hear some Blondie from 1976 (I think that Pipettes’ “Call Me” summoned her, despite not being a cover of the classic 1980 song).

Megan did a blog-scour this week and happened across a bunch of rare-enough’s for a rare-enough February 29th, including Royal Wood injecting some slight winter light into a classic Sam Roberts summer song, and a new track from the upcoming Santigold album. It’s her first LP since her self-titled debut, released last leap year.

We also hear a one-off track Real Estate has done for a Record Store Day release, and brand new music from Great Lake Swimmers, Of Montreal, and Spiritualized.  Here’s a leap day rarity: deciding to lead the new album, Sweet Heart Sweet Light, with a cover light that one (above), and a raucous two-part song like this one.

Things begin with an addictive track from husband-and-wife duo Tennis, then the title track from the new Plants and Animals disc that has these Canadian indie-rock fans salivating. Plus, Andrew Bird is set to release Break It Yourself on March 6, so we hear a track, despite his omission of Hamilton or Toronto on the list of his spring tour dates.

Pronouncing Xiu Xiu (sounds something like shoe-shoe) is probably easier than classifying their sound, which is reason enough for us to play a song off Always, due out next week. And Okkervil River side-project Shearwater have the power-pop sound down so pat, we fit them right next to Noel Gallagher, who still knows that game well.

New music from Sleigh Bells takes a razor blade to electro-pop, and we continue with that vibe with Montreal’s Grimes, then soften it a bit with some music new material from Air, and Silver Swans (shout out to Music Between Friends for that excellent recommendation!).

And lastly, after seeing a bootleg video of Sandro Perri & Co. playing the mind-blowing “Wolfman” from their recent visit to Hamilton, we make up for airing an edited version last year by playing the song in its full 10-minute glory. We unapologetically err on the side of the female voice this week, but maybe its because we can’t get enough of Simone Schmidt’s shimmering vocals over-top her raucous band-mates, One Hundred Dollars. Dare I say they maybe give fellow Torontonians The Sadies a run for their money?

A brief tour of Europe yields snow in Sweden, and unfortunately no satisfying stop in Paris. But across the channel, Los Campesinos!, Frank Turner, 2:54 cheer us up in different, moody ways, before the Chemical Brothers promote their new concert-film, Don’t Think. The movie screens in T.O. for just one night on Thursday before a wider release in February, but it will apparently blow your mind if you’re lucky enough to see it.

Having to settle on 24 albums (plus two from 2010) in the independent/alternative oeuvre was far more difficult than it sounds. Culture progresses towards the musical singularity unabated, so behold a broadly genre-less future where you have no idea what you’re listening to, but it still sounds pretty damn good! In the end, this show is actually overflowing with music, including a pared down tracks by The Field and Toronto’s own Sandro Perri (and a tip of the hat to Impossible Spaces, which landed on Pitchfork’s list).

This isn’t a countdown, but we do end with our unqualified favourites of the annum: The Vaccines are a presence at the top with their shapely punk-rock re-boot What Did You Expect from the Vaccines?; and No Joy’s fuzzy dream-pop is a nominally Canadian, nominally 2011 release that compliments that sound nicely.

But it’s two ladies who steal the show this year. St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) continued her ascent to the top of the inscrutable-pop-charts, and Little Scream (aka Laurel Sprengelmeyer) emerged out of Iowa to become Montreal’s most well-connected young musician.

We’re on break for a couple of weeks, but here’s one last song for a year that began a Tiger, and ended a Rabbit. Thanks for listening, and all the best in 2012!

We call this our Christmas show, but up here in Northern climes there are enough cold, wet and gloomy reasons to require a cheer-up at the Winter solstice. It doesn’t matter what festival of lights you celebrate, a strong drink and a pat on the back offered up in the spirit of human camaraderie is always appreciated before the long, trudge home in the moonlit snow.

Speaking of snow, there’s plenty of it this week from ladies who know what they’re talking about. Highlights include a great new Meaghan Smith song that’s making the rounds (she’s from London, she gets snow), and one by Toronto’s Weather Station (who just played Hamilton last week).

We’re in love with a darling little tune by Owl & Mouse with the refrain, “Hiding from my family / In my parents room” that might resonate with some folks, and an aching Frightened Rabbit song evokes some of the bittersweet nature of the season.

Big shout-outs to Zunior (the independent online music store) for offering up annual doses of Canadian indie-rock Christmas music, and to Darren Hayman (of Hefner fame) and Fika Recordings, who released an amazing digital advent calendar of free songs called Christmas in Haworth.

So this week we look back at some of the more notable releases from the past year–stuff that maybe would have grabbed more of your attention if it weren’t such a bumper crop. Mike listened to a lot of Washed Out on train-trips this year, and Austra’s Feel It Break has made its way to the top of NY Mags’ list.

Discs by Radiohead, Mogwai, and Iron & Wine were worthy additions to those bands’ discographies, but maybe didn’t garner all that much attention from fans. Cults came out of nowhere this year to a lot of buzz, and yesterday’s buzz-band The Drums issued a fun and very listenable album in [em]Portamento[/em], an LP that may make Smiths’ fans smile.

We heard a lot from Toronto’s Hooded Fang, Purity Ring, and RAA this year and reference accordingly, though Kansans (and husband-wife duo) Mates of State also make a more than token appearance. Plus, we rarely play a song thrice, but maybe The Decemberists’ “June Hymn” is most deserving of prettiest song designation.

Some boys are jags and play video games, so Lana Del Ray has to make an appearance. Like a classic video game playing jag, Mike proclaims Ohbijou’s “Niagara” his favourite song of the year on behalf of us both. It’s okay though, because it really is a great song.

It’s a Happy Thanksgiving for a lucky American listener because we have a random and brand new Jens Lekman song to throw her way, along with similarly freshly squeezed material from fellow Yanks Atlas Sound, and Wales’ Los Campesinos! The Campesinos, it seems, are not happy kids anymore.

A long lost Iron & Wine track goes well with the Great Lake Swimmers playing a classic Grapes of Wrath tune (from a neat compilation that has current Canadian artists covering 90s trailblazers).  And since the XX cover we had last week went down so smoothly, why not another one?

Besides celebrating our 250th podcast of myboytheriotgirl, tonight’s episode also marks the beginning of the ninth season of the show on 93.3FM.  That’s right, almost exactly eight years ago I first went on the air here at CFMU, pulling from the new releases shelf with abandon and spinning a mix of independent “love songs and fight music,” along with old favourites and material from Canadians and up-and-coming female artists.

Mike joined me a year or so later, and we were the first show at CFMU to begin podcasting our shows, mostly just to test out the technology. After graduation, when we moved from daytime to the overnight spot we still fill, our podcasts became the easiest way for listeners to hear the show, and our recent relaunch of myboytheriotgirl.com has only helped listeners connect. Over the past few years we’ve jacked up our CanCon, added theme shows, and have fundraised a few hundred dollars for CFMU, despite being on between 2 and 7am.

So instead of reciting the many, many artists featured in tonight’s show (except for maybe the Rural Alberta Advantage, who will be playing Hamilton Place with Sam Roberts next week), I’d just like to say thanks for listening, and that it’s been fun filling the 93.3′s late-night airwaves with music you might not hear anywhere else on the radio dial.

Mike’s been waiting a while now for the sophomore album from Real Estate, and Days doesn’t disappoint and has been getting positive reviews.  We get to a quick track from it, along with a song by fellow New Jersey natives Ducktails (the cute video for “Hamilton Road” will make you crack a smile–thanks to Soundcheck for posting it!). Also imported from the US of A is the lead track from Wilco’s latest, The Whole Love.

We round things out with some dreamy noise pop from Sleigh Bells, Colleen Green, and M83, who just formally released Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, and it is awesome. We also go international to hear from boy-girl duos Slow Club (UK), and Mates of State (USA), who both gifted the world with brand new albums this fall, and The Knife (Sweden). This particular brother-sister duo can please your ears as easily as they defy description, so we close out this week with the first two tracks off their seminal 2006 disc Silent Shout.

First off, to new listeners/students at McMaster (home to CFMU), welcome to Hamilton, we’re happy to have you!  Hopefully you had a chance to experience the amazingness of Supercrawl last weekend, and are now totally inoculated and will make many trips downtown over the course of your degree–remember, Westdale is nice, but there’s way more to Hamilton, and most of it is across the 403.

We’re Megan and Mike, and this is myboytheriotgirl, a weekly music digest that mixes tracks by new and independent artists with indie/alt favourites (see the tag cloud in the sidebar to get an idea of the artists we play—->). Our show is podcasted most Wednesdays, and we do our best to focus on Canadian and female artists. We also love requests, so don’t be shy!

This week we start off by firmly closing the door on summer by re-listening to a few of our favourite tracks from artists who released new albums this year, including a track from PJ Harvey‘s Mercury Award-winning Let England Shake. Since she’s the first artist to win two of the prestigious awards, we’ll hear some other material from her long and glittering recording history.

We also get to new music from Canadians Dan Mangan, Ohbijou, and Hamilton’s own husband-and-wife duo Whitehorse (who we managed to catch live as they prepared to tour across Canada).

Things wrap up with another recent fave from Vancouver’s The Pack A.D., who just released their latest, Unpersons, yesterday.  It rocks, and because it does, we’ll be doing an album feature on it for next week’s show.

A request by Scott is fulfilled–Edinburgh’s Withered Hand‘s latest album was out in March–and we’ll get to another request (from Michael) next week. Basia Bulat also gets some time since she’ll be reprising her beautiful performance with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra at Supercrawl this September 10th.

HF’s debut, Album is long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize, as is Land of Talk‘s Cloak and Cypher (which we eschew in favour of a song of their 2006 debut). After being haunted by ‘Hunted By A Freak’ for months, Mike finally presses play on some classic Mogwai, followed up with new Chad VanGaalen, who will be playing some festivals this summer in support of his new disc, Diaper Island.

Continuing the ladies’ rock out is Kelli Schaefer, who was recommended by Michael. She’s a west-coast indie with the voice and cadence reminiscent of Bjork, and her Ghost of the Beast is one of those rare albums that creeps up on you and quietly blows you away.

Megs stumbled upon this cool Adult Swim Singles Project, and we play a track featuring Chairlift‘s Caroline Polachek with Washed Out, along with the other side to a release by the mysterious Purity Ring.

Leading with a track sent along to us by Amy, we even fit in a summer pop set with some LA artists, and play a fantastic track by Family of the Year, as well as a track by Seattle’s The Cave Singers, an off-shoot of Pretty Girls Make Graves.
